Adopting a Cat or Dog in Oakville...

We have a wonderful, white pussy cat named Annie the Terminator. She’s perfect. Really. She’s affectionate, but not overly so. She’s clean, and doesn’t shed too much. She has her claws but never uses them on us. We love her.

Especially my three-year-old daughter. Poor Annie. Hugs, kisses, squeezes, my daughter loves her to pieces. And Annie can hear her coming.

Annie hangs out in my room on my bed, in my closet, on my dresser or on top of the bookshelf. She feels safe there. But the second she hears those telltale 33-lb. steps, she knows what’s coming for her.

And she bolts.

We adopted Annie from PetSmart a couple of years ago. They have a program of adoption with local pet rescue operations. The Oakville location adopts out cats from Abandoned Cat Rescue.

The boys had wanted a rodent, my husband and I didn’t. So we settled on a cat.

It was a great decision. Cats are sweet, easy, affectionate but not overly so, and she’s been a great addition to our family.

If you’re planning on getting a pet, please consider adoption.

Franklyn D. Resort, Review

This post is a little off topic, as this resort obviously isn't in Oakville. It's in Runaway Bay, Jamaica, and it's the most amazing family resort ever. Perfect for anyone with kids, so in that sense, perfect for those in Oakville with kids.

I have to start by saying I think this place is rated three stars. That's bullocks. I'm not sure how the star-system is based, but Franklyn D. Resort is definitely a 4-star IMO. It's spotless, the service is excellent and there is a ton to do. It's unfortunate because I think some people are deterred by the three stars, especially travel agents -- one in particular said to  me, "Oh, you can't take your children to a three-star resort!" So I booked myself and got a better deal anyhow.

Franklyn D Resort, or FDR as it's known, is small (less than 80 suites, I believe), and all the suites have at least one bedroom. We booked a one-bedroom, and were upgraded to a two-bedroom at no extra cost.

Our suite was two levels: the first with a full kitchen, living room and powder room; the second floor had two bedrooms. The kids' room had three beds, their own washroom and TV. Our room had a king-sized bed, TV and a washroom as well. I've never stayed in a bigger vacation suite, and it was certainly luxurious having all that space. My husband likes to stay up late, so he had his own area at night when we were all sleeping. The room was spotless, maybe a bit dated, but that didn't bother us in the least.

Now the best part. Every family at Franklyn D. Resort gets their own vacation nanny who will be as involved with your kids as you'd like them to be. They work from 9 a.m. to 12:30, then from 1:30 to 4:45. They also clean your room, and stock your refrigerator with whatever you want. We have a 3-year-old, 9-year-old and a 10-year-old. The two older kids could roam around the resort on their own, and do whatever they wanted. The pools have lifeguards, and my only stipulation was that they didn't go in the ocean without us (although there would have been many eyes on them there, too). There were staff everywhere, and they were amazingly nice; you could really tell how much they love kids.

Our nanny Karisse spent most of her time with our youngest, though she'd always go find the others when there was something going on she thought they'd enjoy. For example, my middle guy loves soccer, and they had beach soccer every afternoon. They also had organized crafts a few times a day, which the kids enjoyed a lot more than they'd thought they would. The craft area is shaded and cool, and surrounded by playgrounds, a petting zoo and a playroom.

They had fun contests for the kids a few times a day, and there would be cute prizes, like Jamaica headbands, keychains and bracelets. For the record, they had fun games and prizes for the adults, too, and I ended up taking home Jamaican coffee, rum and jam.

The kids had their own buffet for lunch and dinner, which they could reach themselves. It had things like pasta, pizza, hotdogs, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, etc.. They could get their food at their buffet, and join you in the restaurant. Or they could order off the adult menu (which my oldest would) or get their food from the grill. My older two spent a lot of time at the grill ordering themselves cheeseburgers, hotdogs, fries and marshmellow-and-banana sandwiches.

Another thing they loved was being able to order whatever they wanted at the bar. I'm still giggling that I heard my middle guy saying to the bartender, "Excuse me, what's your most popular virgin drink, bartender?" Every day they had a drink special for both the adults and the kids, so that was fun for all of us. Plus, they could order any concoction of smoothie any time of day.

The food was pretty good. The breakfast and lunch buffets, as well as the beachside grill were my favourites. I didn't love the dinners, but they weren't too bad. The food quality didn't mar my vacation in any way, as everything else more than compensated for where the food lacked. The buffets were fresh and good, just limited because the place is so small. But I'm quite happy to eat all kinds of salads, buns, cheese and fruit every day.

I think my favourite part was that you never felt like your kids were annoying to other people, because everyone had kids. They were everywhere, and not just tolerated but celebrated. The staff really watched out for them, and did everything they could to make sure they had a good time.

And those long, luxurious hours spent in the shade by the pool, pina colada in hand, reading an amazing book...they were paradise. We went for five nights; next time, I'd like to make it a full week.

Franklyn D. Resort is the ultimate family vacation spot. No worries, mon.

Leave a message if you have any specific questions about FDR, I'd be happy to answer any I could.

Lotsa fish!
Bunnies to play with!
Dress-up night, they all got prizes.

Little Rascals

Little Rascals is definitely geared towards the younger set, as in infants up to maybe six years old. It's small, but sufficient for the little ones, and the management keep it nice and clean. Every time I've gone, it's been very quiet, so that's a bonus in my opinion.

I wouldn't dream of taking my older kids there; they'd be bored out of their minds.

There's a little baby area, and then a play structure for the slightly bigger kids. They have a few toys and some books, as well. The bathrooms have slippers for parents and kids so their feet don't get cold on the tile floor.

My daughter attended a party there a few months back and had a great time. They overlap parties, so towards the end, a group of older kids -- maybe 6 or 7 -- came in for a party, and they seemed too big for the place. I was amused, however, at the little boy who kept running past me whispering "bad words," thinking he'd shock me. It was actually pretty cute in a weird sort of way.

I'm considering holding my daughter's fourth birthday party here in a couple of months, but one thing holding me back is the length: they're two and a half hours. When it comes to parties, less is more. Especially for the parents who will inevitably stay for this age group.

Waterpark Fun in Niagara

Just over an hour away from Oakville, Niagara Falls is a place for young and old to go and have fun, take in the sights and get overwhelmed by the kitsch. Over the last few years, businesses in the area have been working hard to attract more families, and it's become a great short-getaway destination.

Fallsview Indoor Waterpark rivals Great Wolf Lodge for sheer awesomeness. The only thing it's lacking is a lazy river, one of my favourite elements at GWL. But Fallsview is still tons of fun, and they cater to young and old alike. My daughter, who was two when we visited, didn't enjoy it too much. GWL is probably better for toddlers. But having said that, they did have a play structure geared towards little ones just upstairs from the pool fun, and some of the pool-slide structures were made with a younger audience in mind. She was probably just being a crankypants, as two-year-olds tend to be.

My boys loved the place. They navigated the facilities fairly independently, as they're both pretty strong swimmers, so we just let them play. For three hours, they were climbing ladders, sliding down enourmous plastic tubes and swimming in the wave pool. Their favourite was the round slide in which they'd swirl around in circles until being dropped down a hole and through a tube to the pool below. We called it the toilet slide, probably not the most appealing name, but they sure had fun on that toilet slide.

The one thing that was disappointing was that a couple of the slides had sharp seams that required maintenance -- as though the sections were coming apart slightly. We left with scratches all over our backs, but smiles on our faces.

Fallsview was connected to our hotel, the Skyline, by an indoor walkway, which was convenient and fun. The Skyline, BTW, was awesome, but that's for another post.

Everyone loves Swiss Chalet, right? Unless, of course, they're crazy people. Or vegetarians, I suppose. Or people with fancy culinary tastes. But even those epicureans probably get a hankering for roasted chicken, soggy fries and the unmatchable Chalet sauce sometimes. Oh, and those buns. Well, truthfully, I think we can all agree the buns used to be better...you know, in the olden days. But I think all of our buns used to be better...whatever. It's still a nice comfort meal.

The food might not be the best, but it's an easy, kid-friendly environment. And thankfully the servers don't wear those lederhosen-inspired uniforms anymore; those made me uncomfortable.

I like to order from Swiss Chalet online for a few simple reasons: first, it's always nice not having to speak to a human being (but of course I'm kidding!), and second, you can do it early in the day and set the delivery time for whenever you want. Easy peasy.

My personal favourite dinner is the Quarter Chicken White with fries, extra sauce and a side of cole slaw.

Indoor Playground Extraordinaire

Amazing Adventures
4325 Harvester Rd., Unit 5
Burlington, ON L7L 5M4
905-639-6544

Well, I  just got back from an afternoon of fun at Amazing Adventures Playland, and I thought I should share my impressions while they're still fresh.

We used to go there a lot when it was just one room. But recently they've expanded and doubled their size, and not to be too cheesy, but they've doubled the fun, too! All three kids had an amazing time! Just to remind you of the age range, my kids are 3, 9 and 10. I'm usually hard-pressed to find something they'll all enjoy, and Amazing Adventures fits the bill.

Basically it's two rooms filled with bouncy castles, video games and climbing structures. There's also a toddler/baby play area, with all those toys they seem to like. And lots of seating for adults. I went on a Saturday after lunch, and it wasn't too busy.

And by consensus (at least with the older two), this is the best indoor playground in Oakville/Burlington.

While we were there, two little boys about four years old took a liking to my older guys and followed them around for a good hour. Of course, my guys are awesome, and played with the these little kids the whole time. They found out their names and chased them around and set up obstacle courses for them... Did me proud, I'll tell you.

Anyhow, I was very impressed by the changes. The only pitfall in my estimation is that because it's two large, separate rooms with only a small doorway connecting them, it's hard to keep track of the kids all the time. With my older ones, I don't care so much, but with younger kids, you might feel better following them around if you're so inclined. Myself, I'm not so inclined, so I planted my ass down and hoped for the best. Also, the boys were very good about keeping track of their little sister. And there were no catastrophies.
